Motherhood: Balancing Act is a large-scale mural project by multidisciplinary artist Cori Rina Oancea, created as a visual reflection on the unseen emotional and physical labor of mothers. Painted entirely by hand using brushes and rollers, the mural is both a personal and political act—highlighting the overwhelming expectations placed on women and the way society relies on their unpaid and often unacknowledged work.
The mural features symbolic elements that represent the multiple roles women are expected to juggle: caretaker, cook, educator, seamstress, emotional anchor, and professional worker. It draws attention to the psychological weight of motherhood, the social contradictions women navigate, and the internal tension of balancing personal identity with systemic expectations.
Motherhood: Balancing Act is more than a mural—it’s a mirror held up to society, and a call to acknowledge the invisible structures that shape our everyday lives.
The mural can be seen at Skeppsbron, near Stenpiren Resecentrum, Gothenburg, Sweden, from May 2025 until October 2025.
